Whether your job title actually includes the words or not, you are in media relations if your responsibilities include communicating with the media on behalf of a company. An effective media relations specialist is skilled at increasing awareness of and trust in a brand, leading to better sales and a healthier bottom line.

If you are a small business owner, media relations is just one of the many hats you wear on a daily basis. But no matter whether you are self-employed or work for a large corporation, improving your media relations skills will go a long way in ensuring your continued success.

Take Care of Yourself First

Media relations can be challenging, largely because it is based on building relationships with other people. Finding the right balance between being friendly but also assertive takes a lot of patience and self-control. One of the best ways to achieve the right mindset for managing interactions with others is by taking care of your physical and mental health.

To feel your best, eat a healthy diet filled with lots of lean protein and fresh vegetables, and limit your intake of sugar and processed foods. You might consider complementing your diet with superfoods and probiotics. Start by researching Nucific supplement reviews to find the right blend for your lifestyle.

Exercise is another important factor in keeping your body and mind at their peak. The specific exercise regimen you follow is less important than creating a regular routine. Find an activity you truly enjoy, whether it’s playing tennis or simply walking through the neighborhood, and block out time for it on your calendar just as you would for a meeting with an important client. Taking care of yourself first gives you the power you’ll need to excel on the job.

Build Meaningful Relationships with the Right People

Relationship-building is the foundation of media relations, so it’s critical to develop excellent interpersonal skills. Get to know the reporters and influencers who cover your industry and follow their stories. Trying to pitch a story idea about your company’s great new cleaning product to a reporter who only covers local government is not only a waste of time but also potentially damaging to your reputation.

Beyond just knowing which reporters are the right audience for your pitch, work on developing an authentic rapport. Compliment them on stories they’ve written, ask them out for coffee, and, most importantly, treat them as whole people and not just a means to your desired end. No one wants to feel taken advantage of, so focus on creating a give-and-take relationship.

Focus on Effective Communication

It probably goes without saying, but communication skills are key to success in media relations. Whether speaking face-to-face or over the phone, you’ll need to maintain a pleasant and professional tone while staying focused and on-message. And don’t forget that listening is an equally important part of communication. There is always room for improvement in communicating effectively, so check out these eight ways to improve your communication skills.

Written communication is another fundamental skill for successful media relations. Whether you’re creating press releases, blog posts, or emails, pay close attention to every detail. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation matter, and any mistakes in these areas will damage your reputation as a thorough and competent professional. Also, tailor your writing to your audience. Rather than focusing on what you want or need, think about the benefit of what you’re proposing to your audience and play up that angle instead.

Get Savvy with Social Media

Social media is an ever-increasing influence in all aspects of society, including media relations. Follow the top writers, editors, and influencers in your field and interact with them on their platforms in helpful and supportive ways. Your goal is to build authentic relationships and establish trust so that when you reach out with a story idea, they’ll be more receptive to hearing it.

As for your own social media presence, remember that you represent not only yourself but the brand you speak for. Understand the different social media platforms and what they’re used for in order to maximize your use of them. When posting on behalf of a company, be sure your tone is consistent with its overall messaging and, above all, keep it professional.

Achieving success in media relations requires a unique blend of interpersonal and communication skills. By focusing first on your own physical and mental wellbeing, you’ll be in good shape to take on a few simple practices that can boost your career to a whole new level.
