What is Organizational Conflict?
The clash that occurs when the goal-directed behavior of one group blocks the goals of another. Although conflict is often perceived as something negative, research suggests that some conflict can actually improve organizational effectiveness.. Can lead to organization learning and change by finding a new way of looking at a problem.
Conflict and Effectiveness :
a. Conflict can be beneficial to some degree.
b. After some point, it becomes a cause for organizational decline.
c. Conflict leads to inability to reach consensus.
d. Too much time spent on bargaining rather than acting to resolve problems
In 1967, Pondy developed a process model of conflict which is very useful in understanding how conflict starts and what stages it goes through. Pondy identifies five stages in what he calls a "conflict episode".
1. Latent conflict
2. Perceived conflict
3. Felt conflict
4. Manifest conflict
5. Conflict aftermath.
