Dr. Charlie Bishop is an accomplished, seasoned executive and published author. Charlie has over 20+ years of experience in senior level positions at Fortune 100 companies, including Federal Express, Baxter, and Bank of America, leading these organizations through significant changes.
In this session, we will look at what is too common in many organizations: Most C-Level executives invest hundreds of hours on capital allocation, balance-sheet management, and competitive positioning—and a fraction of that time on the talent decisions that actually execute the strategy.
This session will provide you with the system to close that gap. More particularly, the framework and key information about a C-Level Decision Support System will be provided.
The information is the same infrastructure used by best-in-class organizations to answer central questions that matter when strategy is being set:
• Do we have the talent and leadership in place to successfully implement our strategic agenda?;
• At this time, what does our overall Bench look like…do we have our Best talent (A-Players) deployed against our Most Important Roles (A-Positions) creating Exceptional Value?
• Where are we destroying Value by tolerating poor performance?
You will be provided with the steps taken by Fred Smith and Dr. Bishop in the early days of FedEx that, over time, have matured from data gathering, using ‘just a discussion to assess leadership…to a paper report, to where the information can be used by the CEO and his/team-also with Boards and Investors. You will be provided with the framework and logic behind the reports, as well as samples of key reports.
The early steps and Information about Leadership and Talent that were consistently improved over time:
Triggering event: A crisis in Federal Express growth: We are growing so fast that the traditional ‘state of the art’ tools to assess talent are not working—Fred Smith… "I want us to use… ' just a conversation.'" This led a different way of assessing talent.
Initial assessment of leaders/talent in FedEx: Using ‘just a discussion’ to assess leaders and talent, … developed over time into the Human Asset(R) Inventory.
Distilling the information into a paper report: The Leadership Pipeline(R) Report.
The CEO Leadership Pipeline(R) Dashboard… overall,
• A summary as to why the CEO and senior team need to be heavily involved in key talent decisions
• `Landing Page’: Two Reports
1. Bench-Strength Matrix …how good and how deep are we?
2. Strategic Deployment Matrix…are we deploying our ‘Best’ against our ‘Biggest Challenges.’
• How to segment your Key Roles that will significantly add Value
• Metrics that will assist in gauging impact, and
• Two Key charts that summarize progress—in one year and long-term.
Bottom line: You'll have a framework and a map to turn talent management into a competitive advantage backed by the same rigor you apply to every other mission-critical function.
