This is session 2 of an online training program on Talent Management for C-level (and beyond), developed by Dr. Charlie Bishop.
It includes:
• Training presentation
• Video training (MP4)
• Board of Directors Oversight of Leadership Risk whitepaper (PDF)
• C-level Questions... That Count in Managing Your Leadership Pipeline (DOCX)
Dr. Charlie Bishop is an accomplished, seasoned executive and published author. Charlie has over 20+ years of experience in senior level positions at Fortune 100 companies, including Federal Express, Baxter, and Bank of America, leading these organizations through significant changes.
In Session 2 of “Talent Management for C Level and Beyond,” Dr. Charlie Bishop helps you design a viable Talent Management System required for your strategy to work at scale. If your business is betting on transformation, new growth, or margin expansion, this session shows how to hardwire talent decisions into those bets instead of treating them as HR initiatives.
The “Secret Sauce”: 3 Levers of a Talent Management System. We introduce the 3 Levers of Talent Management – Alignment, Information, and Consumption – as the basis of your operating model for how presidents, CEOs, and C-suite leaders and the organization actually put in place a Leadership Pipeline, not just talk about it. You will gain insights as to where the process breaks down (misaligned roles, missing data, or leaders not acting on insights) and define what must be true for each lever in your organization over the next 12–24 months.
• Alignment: It is essential that the Executive and Human Resources ‘be on the same page’. If not, failure!
• Information: Lack of solid, differentiating information about your Leadership and Talent is essential. If not, do not waste your early and avoid the rush! We introduce the Human Asset Inventory… a unique way of gathering information…by using this unique approach, ‘just a conversation’—and, no preparation!
• Consumption: Insight without follow-through is wasted. You will clarify where and how your top team must consume talent information in real decisions—so that talent action shows up in the same room and on the same agenda as financial trade-offs.
Considerations in designing the Executive Talent Information System
Instead of overwhelming dashboards, we focus on what executives actually need to see to sleep better at night. You will pressure test a Talent “Control Panel” that surfaces:
• A segmented view of critical roles vs. supporting roles.
• A simple Strategic Deployment Matrix showing whether your best people are in your most consequential roles.
• Leading indicators on bench strength, succession risk, and time to deploy talent into new priorities.
The design standard is simple: if the CEO had only this page in front of them, would they change any decision they are about to make?
What You Leave With
By the end of Session 2, participants will have:
• A clear view of the non-negotiable elements of a Talent Management System for the future that ‘works.’
• An introductory summary of an Executive Talent Information System –more details will be provided later in this course.
• A practical framing to talk about talent in the same disciplined, peer-to-peer way they talk about capital, risk, and growth.
Dr. Bishop's program aims to change this by providing a proven framework and turnkey toolkit—scalable to any size of organization. Our methodology is a refreshing and different, common-sense approach, which will work for you and for your organization. You will learn best practices discovered in premiere organizations, such as FedEx, Baxter International, Bank of America, and other firms. You will also come to discover and understand how we have truly over-complicated this talent issue. Thus, this program will be about simplification and "common sense" workable solutions.
