At the start of my Driving Change Management training, I always drop a line that either gets nods of agreement or sparks that "hang on a minute" … "Regardless of type, all projects are change projects" … then I ask – do you agree? Some dive straight in with "of course", whilst others are already lining up counterarguments. I like that mix because it opens the door to one of the most important truths (and misunderstandings) about what we do.
On one hand you have organisation-based technology implementations, process changes and culture change (major impact on people) and then there are large country infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads and tunnels (both environmental and people impact). My rationale for asking this is that I believe they are all change projects in some way shape or form as they involve people who will be impacted. But do they all need Change Management to help with the people side of things?
