The quality of what AI produces for an auditor depends almost entirely on the quality of the prompt. This is Module 11 of the AI-Powered Internal Audit Professional Series, a 15-module program developed and published by Business Excellence to give audit professionals genuine, applied AI skill.
This module turns prompt engineering from guesswork into a disciplined professional skill. At its center is the CRAFT framework – Context, Role, Action, Format, and Tone – a memorable, systematic approach to constructing every audit prompt so that nothing critical is left to chance. The module shows, through direct contrast between poor and effective prompts, how a vague request produces generic output of little audit value, while a CRAFT-structured prompt produces specific, structured, audit-ready content suitable for workpapers.
Each CRAFT element is developed in depth: providing the right amount of organizational, process, and technology context; assigning the role that shapes the AI's perspective and expertise level; specifying actions with strong, explicit verbs; defining output format so results are immediately usable in audit documentation; and setting the tone appropriate for management or audit committee audiences.
The module delivers a starter set of audit-specific prompt examples for the tasks auditors perform most often – risk assessment, control gap analysis against frameworks such as COSO and COBIT, audit finding drafting in a 5C structure, document and policy summarization, transaction analysis, and executive summary preparation. Auditors are shown how to customize and save effective prompts for reuse across their teams.
Critically, the module embeds a framework for responsible generative AI use, beginning with the principle of independent verification: every factual claim, citation, statistic, and regulatory reference an AI produces must be checked against authoritative sources before it enters a workpaper or report.
COMPANION PRODUCT – SOLD SEPARATELY
For auditors who want a complete, ready-to-deploy prompt library to use immediately in engagements, Business Excellence also publishes The Internal Audit Prompt Engineering Bank – a separate, standalone reference of 250+ ready-to-use audit prompts covering the complete audit lifecycle, each with customization tips and verification requirements. Module 11 teaches the skill of prompt engineering; the Prompt Bank delivers the deployable toolkit. They complement each other but are sold as separate products on Flevy.
Aligned with the IIA Global Internal Audit Standards 2024 and reflecting current ISACA guidance, and delivered as a professional PowerPoint presentation with full speaker notes, the module includes the CRAFT reference, audit prompt examples, a responsible-use checklist, real-world examples, and a 10-question knowledge assessment quiz.
