Leaders across industries face mounting pressure to deploy Generative AI at scale. The technology promises significant gains in productivity, decision-making, innovation, and operational effectiveness.
Yet, rapid deployment without appropriate governance introduces substantial reputational, legal, and operational risks. Hallucinations, data leakage, compliance failures, bias, and unclear accountability can undermine Value Creation and erode trust.
Leaders must recognize that governance is not a one-time activity. As GenAI capabilities mature, operating models and organizational structures must evolve. This requires redefining roles, accountabilities, workflows, and decision rights to fully capture value while maintaining appropriate oversight.
To deploy GenAI responsibly and at scale, organizations should focus on 3 governance considerations:
1. Build a GenAI Governance Model – A strong governance model provides the structure needed to balance innovation with control and maintains visibility over how GenAI is used and governed.
2. Develop core capabilities to build the environment – Organizations must define the core capabilities required to extract value from the technology and ensure those capabilities exist across both technical and business functions.
3. Allow the Business function to lead GenAI implementation – Rather than relying solely on the technology function to drive adoption, organizations should empower functional leaders and frontline employees to identify opportunities and guide implementation. The GenAI Governance Model and Center of Excellence (COE) provide the guardrails, risk oversight, and integration support needed to enable responsible deployment.
Each of these considerations is discussed in depth.
