THE BLUE-GREEN GAME: FACILITATOR INSTRUCTION KIT
A Turnkey Corporate Training Simulation in Trust, Collaboration, and Win-Win Thinking

Transform Silos into Synergies in Just 45 Minutes

In many modern organizations, a genuine win-win outcome is hard to reach. Trust, communication, and cross-team collaboration are frequently in short supply, leading to defensive caution, friction, and missed strategic opportunities.

The Blue-Green Game is a highly interactive, team-building simulation that addresses this challenge head-on. Designed for live, live-facilitated, or virtual environments, this simulation puts the choice between competition and collaboration directly into your participants' hands and lets the scoreboard do the teaching.

This professional, premium training kit is a complete "plug-and-play" solution. Whether you are a corporate trainer, external management consultant, or HR professional, this resource gives you everything you need to run an impactful, memorable team-building session that drives deep behavioral insights.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the simulation and debrief, participants will connect their in-game strategic choices with three fundamental pillars of organizational performance:

•  Trust: Experience how quickly trust forms, how slowly it is rebuilt, and the specific actions that break it in cross-functional teams.
•  Communication: Discover how restricted communication amplifies distrust and defaults teams to cautious or exploitative behaviorsâ€"mirroring real-world silo friction.
•  Teamwork (Win-Win Thinking): Unpack the natural tension between short-term personal/silo gains and long-term, shared organizational success.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE TOOLKIT

This master exchange and facilitator kit is fully completed and ready for deployment. The download includes:

1. OEC Blue-Green Game Facilitator Deck (PPTX / 34 Slides):
•  A beautifully formatted, revised slideshow to introduce the game's rules, pairing structures, and scoring rules.
•  Fully customizable, allowing you to add your corporate branding or customize instructions to suit specific audience needs.

2. OEC Blue-Green Game Facilitator's Guide (DOCX / Comprehensive):
•  A robust, step-by-step master script for running the simulation successfully, even if you have never facilitated a team game before.
•  Includes a pre-session logistics checklist, room setup guidance, referee briefing scripts, round-by-round instructions, and structured debrief questions.
•  Equipped with a "common pitfalls" section to handle challenging group dynamics seamlessly.

3. OEC Blue-Green Game Instruction Sheet (DOCX):
•  A concise, printable 1-page guide given to each participant summarizing the objective, game rules, and scoring table.

4. OEC Blue-Green Game Cards Handout (DOCX):
•  A print-ready template containing the required "Exchange Cards". Facilitators print one set (5 cards) for each of the active teams.

HOW THE BLUE-GREEN GAME WORKS

The game's design uses an experiential card-exchange mechanic to create organic, high-stakes decisions:

1. The Setup & Team Structure

Participants are divided into four teams: A1, A2, B1, and B2. The facilitator frames this within a corporate org chart (e.g., Group A and Group B under a central CEO) to simulate departmental dynamics. Pairs are established: A1 exchanges cards only with A2, and B1 exchanges only with B2. Two referees manage the exchanges.

2. The Blind Card Exchange

Over five rounds, each team must privately decide to submit either a Blue card or a Green card to their referee. The twist? A team only learns what color they received after their own card has been submitted—preventing a passive "wait-and-see" strategy.

3. The Dynamic Scoring Table

Points are awarded based on the combination of colors exchanged. As the rounds progress, the stakes grow, culminating in a dramatic, high-impact final round.

4. The Negotiation Window

After Round 2 (and before Round 3), teams have the option to notify the referee and request a 60-second negotiation window in a neutral area. Teams can agree to any strategic plan (e.g., "Let's both play Blue"). However, no team is obligated to negotiate, and no team is obligated to keep their promise. What happens next in Round 3 is often the single richest topic in the debrief.

THE DEBRIEF: WHERE THE LEARNING HAPPENS

The simulation is only half the battle; the debrief questions are what turn the experience into a lasting lesson. The Facilitator's Guide provides a curated set of deep-dive questions to help teams transition their insights back to their actual day-to-day work:

•  How did early strategies form, and what made you change your approach?
•  If you reached a negotiation agreement, did you honor it? Why or why not?
•  How did it feel when trust was broken? Is recovery possible in professional relationships?
•  What will you do differently the next time you find yourself in a real, complex cross-functional negotiation?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Q: What is the ideal group size and duration for the Blue-Green Game?
A: The game is optimized for an ideal group of 20-24 participants divided into 4 teams. However, it is highly scalable! It can be run with as few as 8 participants (2 teams) or up to dozens of participants by running parallel sets of teams. The entire session—including setup, rule briefing, active play, and the critical debrief—takes 45-60 minutes.

Q: What physical materials do I need to prepare as a facilitator?
A: Prep is minimal! You only need to print the participant instruction sheets, print and cut out the exchange cards (5 per team), draw a simple scoring matrix on a flipchart or whiteboard, and provide one pen per team and a marker for referees.

Q: Can the Blue-Green Game be run virtually?
A: Yes! The game easily adapts to a virtual format. Facilitators can utilize breakout rooms for private team strategy discussions, use private chat messages or digital forms to act as the "Exchange Cards," and share their screen to display the updated digital score sheet.

Q: Is this game suitable for leadership and negotiation training?
A: Absolutely. It is highly recommended as an ice-breaker or centerpiece for negotiation skills training, conflict management workshops, change management initiatives, systems thinking courses, and Lean / Six Sigma programs.
