How an active and visible Sponsor is the #1 contributor to success when it comes to change implementation. But it's unfortunate that they don't all know that. According to some statistics I picked up a while back (I think it was from Prosci) teams report that half of their sponsors have no understanding or only some understanding of their role in managing the people side of the change and that they underestimated or misunderstood the people-side impacts on a project e.g. some 36% underestimated/misunderstood the people side of change and 55% lacked the time & resources to properly fulfill this important and critical role. What damning statistics.

I'm sure we all know that from various surveys and research it has been determined that Sponsors are the No1 factor in helping change to be successful. But, yes there's always a but, in reality, it is hard to find the kind of individual that has all the capabilities and attributes that a Project Sponsor should possess such as commitment, understanding, competence, credibility, and then some. Well, I've identified what I think are the 10 most important things they need to do. Of course, there are probably more but I think these will do for now.
