DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION

Conflict tends to have a negative connotation based on our experiences, but it does not have to be this way. When we seek to understand, we communicate that we care enough to work through difficult situations and determine how to make things better to reduce stress, promote communication and enhance teamwork.

What is the cost to your organization when an individual withholds information? Whether information is being withheld intentionally or out of a fear of failure, it is not ever a good idea for a supervisor or manager to be caught off guard. It's difficult to manage situations when we are forced to be reactive versus proactive. With a proper "heads up" we can effectively marshal additional resources, adjust deadlines, initiate customer service and/or public relations actions to mitigate long-term problems and be perceived as effective managers. Creating a safe environment where associates can bring problems to the forefront will go a long way in giving colleagues the confidence to communicate difficult messages so they can be effectively addressed. Doing so facilitates teamwork, enhanced customer service, improved communication and effective problem solving.

With this tool you get the following:

•  The effects of withholding information.
•  Considerations for why the individual is withholding information.
•  Numerous solutions for improvement.
•  Ideas for negotiating/adjusting solutions.
•  Potential barriers and ways to overcome them to achieve resolution.
•  Implementation timeframe.
•  Follow-up review commitments.

Additionally, we provide a blank, editable Conflict Resolution Worksheet and the Worksheet Guidelines providing a step-by-step process for addressing your own workplace conflicts.
