DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION
5S good housekeeping and workplace organization is a set of basic management principles that are widely adopted in industries today. The cornerstone of 5S is that untidy, cluttered work areas are unproductive. 5S is a powerful improvement process that gets impressive results. In a nutshell, the five principles or pillars are defined as Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. Because these words begin with S, they are commonly referred to as 5S.
5S can be applied to make your workplace cleaner and safer and your job simpler and more satisfying. It is about how to create a workplace that is clearly organized, free of clutter, arranged so you can easily find things, and sparkling clean—a place where anyone would be proud to work. In addition, 5S principles form the core elements of Lean thinking and a visual workplace and are a fundamental platform for world-class manufacturing.
Specially designed for the audience on the shop floor, this 5S Poster depicts the meaning, principles and practices of an organized, standardized and productive workplace.
The poster comes in two themes: color and monochrome. Formatted in PDF and in editable PPTX, the poster can be easily printed on an A3-sized paper from an office copier machine and displayed on employee workstations, or distributed together with your workshop handouts.
The poster complements the '5S Techniques' and '5S for the Office' training presentation materials. It serves as a takeaway and summary of your 5S presentation.
The 5S Poster describes what is 5S, its benefits as well as the visual management tools. For the main contents, the 5S Poster describes each of the 'S', including the meaning, principles and practices:
1. SORT
Remove all items from the workplace that is not needed and keep what is needed.
Principles:
• Stratification management
• Dealing with the causes
Practices:
• Distinguish between the necessary and unnecessary
• Get rid of what you do not need
• "When in doubt, move it out"
2. SET IN ORDER

Principles:
• Functional storage
• Search elimination
Practices:
• Arrange items in order for easy access
• A place for everything
• Everything in its place after use
3. SHINE
Keep things clean and tidy; no trash or dirt in the workplace.
Principles:
• Cleaning as inspection
• Degrees of cleanliness
Practices:
• Eliminate the sources of dirt and filth
• Cleaning as a form of inspection
• Clean everything, inside out
• Define a shine check sheet
4. STANDARDIZE
Establish standards and guidelines to maintain a clean workplace.
Principles:
• 5S standardization
• Visual management
Practices:
• Establish standards and guidelines
• Make standards and guidelines visual
• Make standards so that abnormality becomes visible
• Use visibility tools
5. SUSTAIN
Make 5S a habit and teach others to adhere to established standards.
Principles:
• Habit formation
• Disciplined workplace
Practices:
• Education and training
• 'Before' and 'after' photos

• Self-discipline
