DESCRIPTION
In their book "Managing Change for Competitive Success," Andrew Pettigrew and Richard Whipp distinguish between 3 Dimensions of Strategic Change:
1. Content of Change (objectives, purpose and goals)
2. Process of Change (implementation)
3. Context of Change (the internal and external environment)
The authors emphasize the continuous interaction among these change dimensions. This model proposes change should not be considered only in terms of the processes, but should also consider the historical, cultural, and political features of the organization. Successful change is a result of the interaction between the content or "what" of change; the process or "how" of change; and the organizational context or "where" of change.
Based on substantial empirical research, they also present 5 Central Interrelated Factors, which allow for successfully managing strategic change: Environment Assessment, Human Resources as Assets and Liabilities, Linking Strategic and Operational Change, Leading Change, and Coherence.
The presentation delves into the intricate details of how the content, process, and context of change interact to drive strategic transformation. It breaks down the "what," "how," and "where" of change, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding these dimensions. The PPT emphasizes the importance of considering the historical, cultural, and political aspects of an organization when implementing change.
The five central factors for managing strategic change are explored in depth. Environmental assessment is highlighted as a continuous monitoring process of both internal and external environments. Human resources are discussed as both assets and liabilities, with a focus on the need for employees to feel valued and trusted. The document also covers the importance of linking strategic and operational change, providing practical insights on how to align these aspects effectively.
The presentation underscores the necessity of coherence across all factors to ensure successful change management. It provides actionable insights and probing questions for managers to consider, aimed at enhancing decision-making and strategic alignment. This document is an essential resource for executives looking to navigate the complexities of strategic change with a structured and research-backed approach.
