TOPIC FAQ

What is a 3-statement financial projection model for shipowners and what does it include?

A 3-statement projection consolidates an Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement to show profitability, assets/liabilities, and cash generation over time. In shipping contexts it typically includes vessel revenues, operating costs, depreciation, interest, tax and financing impacts presented annually as Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement.

How can I model multiple vessels and long-term timelines in an Excel shipping model?

Models designed for shipowners allow separate inputs per vessel (type, age, purchase/sale details, revenue and cost profiles) and aggregate outputs across a long horizon. The referenced Shipping & Shipowners Business Financial Projection 3-Statement Model supports up to 20 vessels and a 50-year annual timeline.

How do ship financial models handle the full vessel lifecycle like purchase, operation, sale and scrappage?

Lifecycle handling includes purchase pricing, part/full loan financing with amortising schedules, operating and admin costs, chartering revenue mechanics, and disposal/scrappage calculations that capture gains/losses and transaction fees, enabling projections across purchase, operation, sale and scrappage stages.

How is discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation incorporated into a shipping financial model?

DCF valuation uses the projected cash flow outputs from the model and a user-defined discount rate input to calculate present value. The integrated DCF in the model consumes the annual projected cash flows and the discount rate inputs for valuation.

What features should I prioritise when selecting a pre-built shipowners financial model?

Prioritise explicit support for vessel-level inputs, amortising loan schedules, nominal versus real projections, checks and input validation, clear line-item explanations, dashboard outputs and an integrated DCF — for example, checks, input validations, DCF, and support for up to 20 vessels.

How customizable are typical Excel ship financial models for naming, currencies and line items?

Many models allow full customisation of business name, currency, timeline start, vessel names/types, age bands and line-item descriptions for revenue, operating and administrative costs; they are often delivered unlocked so users can modify labels and categories.

What inputs do I need to model charter revenue and operating costs per vessel?

Charter revenue modelling typically requires rates per day, operating days per annum, credit terms, and inflation assumptions for revenues; operating costs need category-level amounts and credit terms. Outputs then show revenue and cost splits by vessel for analysis.

What financial items should be included when preparing projections for vessel acquisition financing?

Acquisition financing projections should include purchase price, loan details with amortising schedules, interest calculations, projected charter revenues and operating costs, tax and dividend assumptions, and resulting cash flows feeding full financial statements and a DCF valuation.
