What it does: the Electrical / HVAC Contracting Business Model is the operating plan an owner or finance lead of a 10-40 person electrical or HVAC contractor actually runs. It starts where a trade business makes or loses money – technician hours. Enter billable technicians, working days, leave and a target utilisation, and the model works out available and billable hours month by month, schedules maintenance-contract and project hours first, and sells the remaining capacity as reactive service at your charge-out rate, with call-out fees, write-offs and materials markup.
Main features: a 15-row project register (secured jobs plus a probability-weighted pipeline) drives a 36-month schedule of work done, progress claims with deposits and claim lag, retention withheld and released after the defects period, and over- and under-billing (contract assets and liabilities) by project. Revenue is split into service, maintenance contracts and projects, and gross margin is shown by stream, with the cost of unbilled technician time shown separately. The P&L runs monthly for Year 1 and annually for Years 2-3, feeding a direct and indirect cash flow, debtor and creditor count-back on your payment days, van stock and a simple balance sheet that balances in every period. The dashboard reports utilisation, breakeven utilisation, effective labour rate, overhead recovery rate, revenue per technician, debtor days, cash conversion, the Year 1 cash low point and overdraft headroom, plus two utilisation x charge-out rate sensitivity grids and eight model checks.
How to work with it: change only the blue inputs, starting with the yellow key drivers, then list your jobs on the Project Register. Black and green cells are formulas. A worked example is preloaded – a fictional contractor with 16-18 technicians, about $4.1m revenue, 72% utilisation and a 5.5% Year 1 net margin – and it ties out to the cent.
Why you need it: contractors rarely fail on margin alone; they run out of cash while debtors, retention and WIP grow. This model shows both in one place, fully unlocked, with 6,005 visible formulas, no macros and an honest cover sheet listing every simplification. Currency-agnostic; treat $ as your currency. For planning only, not financial advice.
