Stand up architecture governance that enables delivery rather than obstructing it.
Most architecture practices do not fail on the design work. They fail on governance: a design authority that drifts, principles nobody references, exceptions that quietly become permanent technical debt, and no way to demonstrate to leadership that any of it is working. This toolkit supplies the whole operating model, ready to tailor and run.
THE PIECES THAT HAVE TO FIT TOGETHER
Governance is not a document set – it is six mechanisms that only work in combination. Principles that resolve recurring arguments in advance. Decision rights that say who approves what at which threshold. A forum with the standing to say no. A review process. A legitimate route to deviate. And measurement that shows the whole thing is functioning.
The piece most often missing is the exception route, and its absence is more damaging than it appears. Without a sanctioned way to deviate, teams deviate anyway and stop telling you. You lose both the deviation and the visibility of it.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
Governance operating model with a 90-day stand-up plan. Design Authority terms of reference and meeting guide. Decision rights and RACI. An architecture principles catalogue of 22 principles, each with statement, rationale and implications. Principles assessment with automatic compliance scoring. Exception and waiver process with register. Governance KPI dashboard covering 14 KPIs with automatic RAG status and trend. Governance report template. Governance Board Pack presentation. Governance calendar. An AI companion and prompt library. A completed worked example for a fictional manufacturer, including a populated dashboard, live waivers and a board pack. Start-here guide and licence.
MEASUREMENT IS WHAT KEEPS THE FUNCTION FUNDED
Architecture practices that cannot evidence their value are the ones cut when budgets tighten. The dashboard covers throughput, decision quality and risk exposure – reviews completed against submissions received, time from submission to decision, the mix of approvals against conditions against rework, conditions closed on time, open and overdue exceptions with trend. The balance matters: measuring only speed produces shallow reviews, and measuring only rigour produces a bottleneck.
DECISION RIGHTS ARE THE LOAD-BEARING PART
Most governance dysfunction traces to unclear decision rights. If nobody has written down who approves a fifty-thousand technology choice versus a multi-million platform selection, everything escalates to one forum, which becomes a bottleneck and gets bypassed. The toolkit provides a tiered model pushing decisions to the lowest level that can be held accountable.
WHO IT IS FOR
Heads of Architecture, chief and enterprise architects, design authority chairs, and transformation leaders establishing or maturing an architecture practice.
