Component Search (Analysis) is used when the Multi Vari shows Unit to Unit variation. It does not interrupt production, is very easy to implement at the shop floor level and uses two (2) samples ? one good and one bad.

Components Search uses very small sample sizes ? two to be exact. This is possible (although contrary to prevailing scientific wisdom) because only the extremes of the distribution are used. By using the two extremes, the full range of the Green Y variation is captured, and the causes can then be systematically isolated by swapping components and/or subassemblies. As long as the same Green Y is used, the Red X will invariably surface from the extreme variability.

The objectives of this module are to understand the power of component search in finding the Red X in assemblies using two samples only.
