Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is a model that ability to cope with national, corporate, and vocational cultures. It was developed by Christopher Earley and Elaine Mosakowski, based on a study of 2,000 managers across 60 countries. CQ is the ability to understand unfamiliar contexts, and then to adjust. It captures an outsider’s seemingly natural ability to interpret someone’s unfamiliar and ambiguous gestures the way that person's fellow compatriots would.
CQ is incredibly useful in business settings, particularly within larger organizations. For instance, in a large company, there are conflicting sub-cultures—e.g., the sales team vs. engineers, PR vs. legal. Various business units, departments, functions, and geographical regions each have their own cultures. Although some aspects of CQ may be innate, any individually reasonably alert, motivated, and poised can attain an acceptable level of CQ.
This model identifies 3 sources of Cultural Intelligence and 6 Cultural Intelligence Profiles.
This presentation also includes a Cultural Intelligence Self-assessment, process to improving CX, as well as a set of templates to be used in your own decks.
This presentation delves into the nuanced relationship between Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EQ), highlighting how CQ builds upon the foundations of EQ to navigate complex cultural landscapes. It identifies three core sources of CQ: Cognitive, Physical, and Emotional/Motivational, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding and developing these competencies. The PPT also outlines the critical cross-cultural skills necessary for high CQ, such as perceptual acuity, relational skills, and tolerance of uncertainty.
Included is a detailed self-assessment tool designed to evaluate your current level of CQ and identify areas for improvement. The six-step process for cultivating CQ is clearly laid out, offering practical guidance for both individual and organizational development. This resource is essential for leaders aiming to enhance their cultural adaptability and effectiveness in diverse business environments.

This PPT slide outlines 6 distinct Cultural Intelligence Profiles that managers typically fall into, based on responses to a CQ Self-assessment. Each profile is characterized by unique traits and behaviors, which can significantly influence managerial effectiveness in diverse cultural settings.
The first profile, "The Provincial," describes individuals who excel in familiar environments, but struggle when faced with cultural diversity. Their effectiveness diminishes outside their comfort zone, highlighting the importance of adaptability in multicultural interactions.
Next is "The Analyst," who approaches foreign cultures with a methodical mindset. This profile emphasizes a structured learning approach, allowing the analyst to navigate unfamiliar cultural landscapes. However, they may initially feel disoriented before they grasp the nuances of their new environment.
"The Natural" relies on instinct rather than systematic learning. This profile suggests a more intuitive understanding of cultural dynamics, enabling the individual to connect with others without extensive preparation. Their ability to read situations can be an asset, though it may lack the depth of analysis.
"The Ambassador" stands out as a confident communicator who may not possess in-depth cultural knowledge, but effectively conveys belonging. This profile emphasizes the balance between confidence and humility, as ambassadors must recognize their limitations and avoid underestimating cultural differences.
Understanding these profiles can be crucial for organizations aiming to enhance their cultural intelligence. By identifying where individuals fit within these categories, companies can tailor training and development initiatives to foster better cross-cultural interactions. This insight can lead to improved collaboration and performance in global markets.
This PPT slide outlines key skills associated with strong Cultural Intelligence (CQ), emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural capabilities in today’s globalized environment. At the center of the visual, a circular diagram highlights 5 essential skills that contribute to effective intercultural interactions.
Perceptual Acuity is the first skill, focusing on the ability to grasp subtle sentiments and meanings during interactions with individuals from different cultures. This skill is crucial for understanding non-verbal cues and underlying emotions that may not be explicitly stated.
Next is Empathy, which involves the capacity to place oneself in the position of someone from a different cultural background. This perspective-taking ability fosters deeper connections and understanding, enabling more effective communication and collaboration.
The third skill, Relational Skills, underscores the enjoyment and enthusiasm for engaging with people from diverse cultures. This openness can lead to richer exchanges and the building of trust across cultural divides.
Tolerance of Uncertainty is the fourth skill, highlighting the necessity to remain comfortable in ambiguous situations that often arise in intercultural contexts. This adaptability to unpredictability is vital for navigating complex interactions without becoming overwhelmed.
Lastly, Adaptability is about modifying one’s behavior to align with varying cultural expectations. This flexibility is essential for successful engagement in diverse environments, allowing individuals to respond appropriately to different cultural norms.
The slide concludes with a note on the nature of these skills, indicating they are primarily "soft" skills, which are often overlooked, but critical for achieving intercultural effectiveness. This document serves as a valuable resource for organizations aiming to enhance their teams' cultural competencies.
This PPT slide presents a self-assessment tool aimed at evaluating an individual's Cultural Intelligence (CQ) across 3 distinct dimensions: Cognitive, Physical, and Emotional/Motivational. Each dimension is assessed through a series of statements that respondents rate on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 indicates strong disagreement and 5 indicates strong agreement.
The Cognitive CQ section focuses on the individual's understanding and knowledge of different cultures. Statements encourage reflection on how one prepares for interactions with diverse cultures and how unexpected cultural encounters are navigated. This section emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and adaptability in cross-cultural situations.
The Physical CQ segment evaluates non-verbal communication skills, such as body language and speech style adjustments. Respondents are prompted to consider their ability to modify their expressions and behaviors to connect effectively with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. This dimension highlights the significance of non-verbal cues in fostering understanding and rapport.
Lastly, the Emotional/Motivational CQ section assesses confidence and comfort in engaging with people from various cultures. It prompts individuals to reflect on their ability to adapt to new cultural environments and their readiness to embrace unfamiliar situations.
Overall, the self-assessment framework encourages individuals to identify strengths and areas for improvement in their cultural interactions. By calculating an average score for each dimension, users can gain insights into their cultural competencies, guiding their personal development in an increasingly globalized business environment.
This PPT slide outlines a structured approach to enhancing Cultural Intelligence (CQ) through 3 distinct steps: Initial Assessment, Training Selection, and Training Initiation.
In the Initial Assessment phase, individuals evaluate their own CQ strengths and weaknesses. This self-examination serves as a baseline for future development efforts. The slide mentions the use of a Cultural Intelligence Self-assessment tool,, but also highlights alternative methods such as simulated business encounters and 360-degree feedback. This variety allows for a more comprehensive understanding of one’s CQ.
The second step, Training Selection, involves choosing training that targets identified weaknesses. For instance, an individual who struggles with physical CQ might opt for acting classes, while someone lacking cognitive CQ could benefit from studying business case studies. This tailored approach ensures that training is relevant and effective, addressing specific areas for improvement.
Finally, Training Initiation applies the training curriculum and exercises selected in the previous step. If an individual has low motivational CQ, they may be assigned simple tasks to build confidence and competence. Examples include practical exercises like finding a newspaper or greeting someone new. These foundational activities are crucial for establishing a solid base before progressing to more complex interactions.
Overall, the slide emphasizes a systematic method for developing Cultural Intelligence, focusing on self-assessment, targeted training, and practical application. This structured approach can lead to meaningful improvements in cross-cultural interactions, making it a valuable resource for organizations aiming to enhance their cultural competencies.
