The Merchant Processing Exposure and Collateral Calculator is a professional decision-support model designed for payments professionals evaluating potential financial exposure associated with merchant processing activity.
The model provides a structured framework for estimating exposure across several common risk sources, including refunds, chargebacks, delayed fulfillment, ACH returns, and future-delivery activity. Users can enter merchant-specific assumptions such as annual processing volume, refund and chargeback rates, applicable exposure windows, prepaid volume, fulfillment timing, ACH volume, reserves, and other available collateral. The workbook automatically calculates modeled exposure, available collateral, coverage ratios, uncovered exposure, and additional collateral that may be required to achieve a user-defined coverage target.
A separate delivery-volume analysis allows users to model a merchant whose products or services are fulfilled across multiple timeframes. Rather than relying on a single arbitrary fulfillment period, users can enter the percentage of volume associated with several delivery intervals and calculate a weighted-average delivery period for use in the exposure model.
The workbook also includes a configurable stress scenario. Users can adjust rate and timing multipliers to evaluate how exposure may change under more conservative assumptions. This provides an additional perspective when reviewing merchants with elevated fulfillment, refund, chargeback, or ACH-return risk.
Built-in model checks help identify invalid rate assumptions, negative inputs, and incomplete delivery-volume allocations. The workbook clearly distinguishes editable assumptions from calculated outputs and includes definitions and methodology guidance to make the model easier to understand and adapt.
This tool may be useful to merchant acquirers, payment facilitators, ISOs, fintech companies, underwriting and risk teams, payments consultants, and other professionals evaluating merchant-processing exposure. It can support new-account underwriting, periodic merchant reviews, collateral discussions, scenario analysis, and internal risk documentation.
The model is intentionally configurable rather than tied to the underwriting policy or risk appetite of any specific organization. Users determine their own assumptions, exposure periods, stress factors, collateral requirements, and target coverage levels.
This document is independently developed as a general professional risk-analysis tool and does not reproduce any proprietary underwriting methodology, confidential company information, or organization-specific approval criteria. It is intended as a decision-support resource and should not be interpreted as legal, regulatory, accounting, or financial advice. Organizations should apply their own policies, judgment, and applicable regulatory requirements when making underwriting or risk-management decisions.
