Strategy Palette: History of Strategy Frameworks (PowerPoint PPT)

Since the 1950s, corporate strategy thinking has been evolving. New strategy frameworks are introduced each year. Today, there are literally 100s of strategy frameworks that have been developed by strategists, academics, and consulting firms.

This presentation presents a historical chronology of key strategy frameworks that have been developed over time. We see how strategy thinking has progressed from "Classical" frameworks to more progressive thinking over time.

In fact, these identified frameworks are mapped against the Strategy Palette, developed by the Boston Consulting Group, which identifies 5 distinct approaches to strategy. The Strategy Palette is a unifying choice framework that guides us in selecting the appropriate strategy for the circumstances at hand and execute it effectively. These 5 strategy approaches are:

1. Classical
2. Adaptive
3. Visionary
4. Shaping
5. Renewal

Each approach is driven by a unique business environment, characterized by 3 dimensions: Predictability, Malleability, and Harshness.

In this presentation, only 81 frameworks have been identified, although 100s of strategy frameworks—and even more management frameworks covering over corporate functions—actually exist.
