Most foreign exchange surprises do not come from bad hedges. They come from exposures nobody reported: a supplier contract priced in dollars, an intercompany loan in the parent's currency, a capital expenditure order in Swiss francs. Before a company can decide what to hedge, it needs a complete and agreed map of what it is exposed to.
This toolkit shows how to build that map and turn it into a monthly net exposure report. It combines a short guide with a ready-to-use Excel register and a questionnaire that subsidiaries can complete in an hour.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• FX Exposure Mapping guide (PowerPoint, 12 slides)
• FX Exposure Register (Excel): one row per exposure for any number of entities and currencies. It tests each item against the entity's functional currency, assigns the currency pair and time bucket, converts to the reporting currency and weights booked, committed and forecast items. Separate sheets show net, gross and open exposure by pair and bucket, the hedge ratio, two completeness checks, and the gain or loss for a currency move you choose, with charts.
• Subsidiary FX Exposure Questionnaire (Word): definitions, 21 yes/no questions across sales, purchases, intercompany, financing and cash, an exposure detail table with the same columns as the register, a reporting calendar and sign-off
• Licence and terms of use
WHO IT IS FOR
Treasurers and treasury analysts in groups with foreign subsidiaries or foreign currency trade, CFOs and controllers who need to explain FX gains and losses, risk managers preparing a hedging policy, and auditors or advisers reviewing FX risk management.
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
A 12-slide guide in which every slide has a headline that states the point, a body that shows it and a closing takeaway. It covers why mapping comes before hedging, transaction, translation and economic exposure, where exposures hide, the functional currency test with intercompany examples, the register fields, netting from gross to net, time buckets and certainty weights, and a sensitivity report.
The archive contains 2 working files and a licence. Nothing is password-protected or locked.
HOW THE SPREADSHEET IS BUILT
Input cells use blue text on a sand background. Formulas are in black and links to other sheets in green. The file opens with a How to use sheet and a Setup sheet for rates, entities and weights. Example data for an invented group with five entities is shown in italics so you can see the model working before you replace it. Print areas are set.
WHAT THIS IS NOT
This is educational material, not financial, accounting or investment advice. All company names, rates and figures are invented. Each file includes a licence page: you may use and adapt the material inside your own organisation, but you may not resell or redistribute it
