BENEFITS OF DOCUMENT
It is trite political science that the External Environment within we operate is composed of a General Environment, and a Specific Environment. The General Environment is characterised by the well-known PESTLEIS acronym ? Politics, Economics, Social/Societal, Technological, Legal, Environmental, International and Security dimensions.
The Specific Environment is generally regarded as relevant to one's specific business, and could include dimensions like suppliers, competitors, stakeholders/shareholders, industry/sector trends, and many other, depending on the specific industry or landscape within which one operates. Differences are mainly related to whether one operates within a Governmental, SOE (State Owned Enterprise), NPO (Non-Profit Organisation), NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation), or for-profit organisation.
In order to create a model to understand the post-COVID pandemic system in South Africa, one could usefully employ the aforementioned construct. But COVID-19 cuts across all dimensions. In fact, one may safely state that since World War II there has not been an event, or crisis, that has so comprehensively impacted the lives of literally everyone on a global scale.
So instead of using these rather staid dimensions as a point of departure, I have decided to employ some other cross-cutting variables as the main headings for further discussion. These topics are the ones that seem to dominate the present surfeit of writing on the subject (of COVID-19) when one does a literature survey in preparation for a narrative of this nature.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: IAN VAN VUUREN CONSULTING
Ian is a seasoned strategist specialising in strategic management, leadership and risk, until recently at a leading facilities management company in the Middle East.
Lately he was instrumental in the development of the business process and architecture that supports the call centre, security, and facilities management capabilities in thè prestigious residential and retail island project in the Middle East, The Pearl Qatar. He also introduced the ISO Integrated Management System suite of accreditations to his organisation (ISO 9001/14001/OHSAS18001), acting as the relevant project manager, and developed the first facilities management doctrine ever written - see link further on this page. He acted as the Balanced Scorecard Coordinator of various companies.
Ian has, amongst others, twenty years of military intelligence, policy formulation and strategic planning experience, serving as Director Air Force Intelligence in South Africa, as well as a further fourteen years of experience in listed companies in South Africa and the Middle East. Part of this was spent within the banking industry, notably as the General Manager Risk Information at the SA Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC).
Ian has a continuous record of success, demonstrated both in the public and private sectors, in the areas of internal and external consulting and in leading and driving organisational change from a strategic management perspective.
His range of practical experiences are augmented by academic studies which have left him with numerous certificates (inter alia all military intelligence and strategic development courses) as well as BA () and MBA degrees, whilst he is currently reading towards his degree in law (LLB). He also recently obtained the ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and ISO 31000 Certified Risk Management Trainer qualifications.
After more than 5 years in Qatar Ian returned to South Africa in April 2014 and has since done work on contract, eg strategy formulation.
