DESCRIPTION
The goal of Lean is the unimpeded flow of goods and services to customers, achieved through waste elimination. Lean focuses on process velocity. If there is one hallmark feature of Lean . . . it is its simplicity. There is no heavy math, obscure concepts, or difficult to implement techniques. At first glance, Lean is deceivingly simple – don't be fooled; Lean is an extremely powerful methodology.
Its beginnings are credited to Toyota, implemented in its Toyota Production System. Indeed the simplicity of Lean and a rigor around its application, have propelled Toyota into the top tier of automobile manufacturers in the world. And other manufacturers have taken notice. As lean thinking spreads, organizations are adapting the tools and principles beyond manufacturing and into logistics, distribution, services, retail, healthcare, construction, maintenance, data management, and government.
This module introduces the reader to Lean. A brief history of Lean is given followed by a comparison of Lean versus mass production. Value added is then defined. A list of Lean tools is presented and the seven wastes are introduced along with an easy to remember mnemonic.
Lean uses the DMAIC methodology. The 15 steps of the DMAIC Roadmap are covered, as well as the purpose and outputs of each of the 5 phases of DMAIC. When completed, you will have an understanding of the principles of Lean, the 7 Wastes, and the DMAIC methodology. This material is suitable for independent study, executive briefing or formal classroom training including quiz questions.
Comes with 6 Excel templates: 7 Wastes, 5S, VSM, 5Why's, A3, SMED
