To drive engagement and manage employees, it is essential for the manager to hold a one to one conversation. These can take place as frequently as weekly but most commonly it is a monthly sit down with each member of the managers team.
In theory these conversations sound easy and sometimes in reality they are. However are they productive? Do they support the employee and the manager? Do they ensure alignment around task with a balanced approach around employee wellbeing? Are they supporting and driving engagement? A good one to one conversation if delivered correctly can be a powerful tool but there is a lot to balance in order to gain the benefit.
Reality shows that a lot of one to ones start with good intentions, but over time they ‘'fizzle'' out. The employee sometimes sees little point in the meeting. The employee can also expert the manager to drive all of the conversation, as after all they have called the meeting. So they enter the meeting with very little to say or come to ‘'nod'' or agree with what the manager has to say. They can also feel that the manager is just checking up on them, wondering why they are asking certain questions. With all of this building to an unproductive or negative situation. The result usually is that the employee will stop turning up for the meeting or add little if the meeting occurs. Resulting in no meeting or a very short meeting. Leaving both the employee and manager wondering how to get this back and how to have a better conversation from both sides.
To resolve this the ‘'One to One'' template has been developed. There are two versions. This is depending upon if the employee manages a team. Or if the employee is an individual contributor. Clearly if the employee manages a team, the manager will want to discuss the employee and their team.
This is a PowerPoint template that can be printed or edited, enabling completion from the employee.
