Product Description – Gas-Fired Power Project Financial Model
What is this model template used for?
This is an Excel-based (.xlsm) project finance model built to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of a gas-fired power generation project. It is designed for independent power producers, project developers, lenders, and financial analysts who need to determine the levelized tariff required to cover capital costs, fuel costs, operating costs, financing costs, and taxes over the life of the plant, while delivering a target return to equity and debt investors.
Main features and highlights
• A four-tab structure: Summary (financial overview, sources & uses of funds, tariff breakdown, and key performance indicators), Control (a full three-statement output – income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow – plus debt service detail), Input (a single consolidated assumptions sheet), and Model Calculations (the underlying calculation engine).
• Plant-level operating assumptions including capacity (MW), availability, capacity degradation, auxiliary consumption, and load factor.
• Fuel-specific assumptions covering heat rate, heat rate degradation, and fuel price, feeding directly into a fuel charge component of the tariff.
• A four-part levelized tariff build-up – capacity charge, fixed O&M charge, variable O&M charge, and fuel charge – each with its own foreign/local currency split and indexation toggle.
• A complete financing module covering CAPEX per MW, total project cost, equity/debt split, cost of equity, cost of debt, loan tenor, grace period, and repayment profile (e.g., mortgage-style amortization).
• Key output metrics including project and equity IRR, NPV, minimum and average DSCR, revenue, and payback period, with a built-in "Converge Equity IRR" toggle to resolve circular financing calculations.
• Multi-currency support (USD/local currency) with configurable exchange-rate indexation (e.g., purchasing power parity).
How to best work with this template
Users should begin by entering project-specific data into the Input sheet – timing, plant and fuel assumptions, tariff components, CAPEX, O&M, working capital, depreciation, tax, and financing terms. The Control, Summary, and Model Calculations sheets are formula-driven and update automatically as inputs change. Because financing costs and the equity IRR are interdependent, the "Converge Equity IRR" toggle should be used to let the model iterate to a consistent solution rather than manually adjusting the tariff.
Why you need this financial model template
It provides a structured, pre-built framework for gas-fired generation project appraisal, eliminating the need to build a levelized tariff and three-statement project finance model from scratch. This saves significant modeling time while keeping the link between operating assumptions, financing structure, and investor returns transparent and auditable, supporting tariff negotiations, lender due diligence, and investment decision-making.
