DESCRIPTION
This module looks at process variation and the methodology widely used to reduce or eliminate it – DMAIC. Variation is first defined, followed by process basics (inputs, process, outputs). These basics are used to introduce process analysis (capability) in the context of variation and the dramatic impact possible through the DMAIC methodology. The two goals of DMAIC are also covered.
Other topics covered in the module include: the problem with managing averages (with an example), common misconceptions of acceptable quality, a modern definition of quality, the definition of six sigma as defined by statisticians, the 1.5 sigma shift used throughout the DMAIC methodology, the implications on quality of complex processes, the 15 steps of the DMAIC Roadmap, the purpose and outputs of each of the 5 phases of DMAIC. When completed, you will have an understanding of process variation, why it is bad, how it can be measured and some preliminary concepts used to tackle it. This material is suitable for independent study, executive briefing or formal classroom training including quiz questions.
