This document refers to the training module 9 only: Cooling System. Gas compression generates heat. For safe and efficient operation of the facility, compressed gas must be cooled. High gas temperatures make it difficult to lubricate bearings and other moving parts.

This is particularly true if the gas is to be recycled through the compressor because hot suction gas will overheat the compressor and cause serious damage. In many large compressors, gas flow is changed from the straight through arrangement. Gas is taken out of the compressor at an intermediate pressure and then returned to the compressor at another point.
