Time management is a challenge for almost every individual.\u00a0 Executives have been found to be complaining more about the scarcity of time.<\/p>\n<p>The advent of 24\/7 communications, increasing sophistication, intense rivalry, and financial insecurities have complicated the situation for the executives.\u00a0 Overloaded executives are struggling to allocate sufficient time to focus on strategic priorities and lead new initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/stream\/leadership\">Time management<\/a> is much more than an individual\u2019s predicament.\u00a0 Its roots can be traced deeply entrenched in organizational structures, values, and beliefs.\u00a0 Leaders who are determined to tackle this issue need to deal with it institutionally.<\/p>\n<p>A 2011 global survey by McKinsey &amp; Company asked 1374 executives (general manager or above level from a broad range of industries) about their time allocation habits.\u00a0 The results revealed a mere 9% of the respondents who were \u201csatisfied\u201d with their time allocation abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Less than 50% of the samples executives were found \u201csomewhat satisfied,\u201d whereas a third were \u201cactively dissatisfied.\u201d\u00a0 However, 50% of the executives acknowledged that they were not adequately focusing on guiding the strategic direction of the business. Poor time managers who are dissatisfied with their time allocation practices can be categorized into four major groups:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Online Addict<\/li>\n<li>The Cheerleader<\/li>\n<li>The Networker<\/li>\n<li>The Micromanager<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/4-Types-of-Poor-Time-Managers.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3745\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/4-Types-of-Poor-Time-Managers.png\" alt=\"4 Types of Poor Time Managers\" width=\"557\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/4-Types-of-Poor-Time-Managers.png 557w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/4-Types-of-Poor-Time-Managers-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Online Addict<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The executives falling under this group are office centered; prefer utilizing most of their time using asynchronous messaging\u2014email, voice mail, phone etc.\u00a0 The \u201cOnline Addicts\u201d spend less time meeting, managing, and motivating their direct reports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/types-and-symptoms-of-poor-time-management-3366\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3746 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Online-Addicts.png\" alt=\"Online Addicts\" width=\"557\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Online-Addicts.png 557w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Online-Addicts-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cheerleader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The executives within the \u201cCheerleader\u201d group include those who spend more time meeting their direct reports face to face, however, their issue is spending limited time interacting with external customers.\u00a0 They are less likely than other groups to use email or communicate through telephone. \u00a0Cheerleaders are employee focused, but less so towards the customer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Networker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cNetworker\u201d comprises executives in the CEO or director positions who spend most of their time outside meeting customers personally or telephonically.\u00a0 The issue with \u201cNetworkers\u201d is that they assign limited time deliberating, setting direction or devising strategy, and meeting their subordinates in person.\u00a0 \u201cNetworkers\u201d are customer focused but lack in terms of devising long-term strategy and engaging their\u00a0direct reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Micromanager<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The executives within this category utilize most of their time alone.\u00a0 They tend to micromanage things, and most of their spend time is spent dealing with emergencies through email or phone.\u00a0 The Micromanagers are operations centric, but are less oriented towards contemplating, setting direction, and meeting people in person.<\/p>\n<p>The most common <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/types-and-symptoms-of-poor-time-management-3366\">symptoms of poor time management<\/a> in executives are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Initial Overload<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lack of Guidance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ineffective Trade-offs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Respecting Time<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Initial Overload<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abundance of large-scale projects and time constraints result in an initial overload for most executives that can lead to failed initiatives and missed opportunities.\u00a0 Dissatisfied executives\u2014from the \u201cOnline Addict\u201d and \u201cMicromanager\u201d groups\u2014fail to dedicate the required time and energy to engage and motivate their teams that propel successful projects.\u00a0 Thus the organizations face \u201cchange fatigue\u201d and lack the vigor to execute important engagements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lack of Guidance <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Typically, there are rare chances of availability of proper time management guidelines for new executives across most organizations.\u00a0 This results in inappropriate allocation of their time on insignificant tasks and discounting strategic priorities.
