A leader sets direction, aligns resources, and motivates action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leaders <b>set direction<\/b>,\u00a0<b>aligns resources<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>motivates action<\/b>\u00a0as suggested by\u00a0the panels in Figure 1.\u00a0 Another way to put it is that a leader <b>develops<\/b>,<br \/>\n<b>holds<\/b>, <b>nurtures<\/b>, <b>communicates<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>drives<\/b>\u00a0to achieve a vision.<\/p>\n<p>As in Figure 2, it helps to think of the leader holding a map, like Harry Potter\u2019s Marauder\u2019s map that is always changing,\u00a0making sense of it, and navigating the course with those led looking on. Wise leaders constantly check with their top team to confirm that they are headed toward the same goals, in the same way, and for the same reasons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3081\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3081 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Slide21-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Slide21\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Slide21-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Slide21.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2: A leader develops, holds, nurtures, communicates, and drives to achieve a vision.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The best leaders are always open to input from their top team to tweak goals and plans along the way. Clarity starts with the leader.\u00a0 If the leader is not clear then no one else can be clear. \u00a0A leader either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Has a\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\">vision and a plan<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and is marshaling and motivating resources accordingly or<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Does not have a vision and plan\u00a0and is, or should be,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\">driving to put one together<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When things fall off track such that the status quo is no longer acceptable the organization will founder until a new vision and plan to achieve it are formed and communicated.\u00a0 To regain its footing a leadership team might go offsite with a facilitator to develop a new vision and game plan.<\/p>\n<p>Preparing for and conducting a facilitated session can accomplish a lot.\u00a0 It can help a leader get clear by serving as a forum in which to talk about ideas and plans; it can help a leader who thinks they are clear to\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">test for alignment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>among their\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/intelliven.com\/note-on-core-leadership-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top team<\/a>; and it can inform a leader who is coming up with a vision by getting feedback, ideas, and\u00a0push-back\u00a0from those he or she most trusts.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, a vision does not magically appear from any facilitated process.\u00a0 Without someone\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">asserting a vision<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for the group to react to, work on, and push and pull into something they can all align around, the group will be ineffective. Many vision-setting exercises get stuck because no one in the group is comfortable enough to put forth a specific idea for fear that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Others will think it presumptuous of them,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">It may be ridiculed,<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">It may be wrong or inadequate in important ways, or<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">It may inhibit others with better ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The group, though, needs something to work with and it is\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">a leader\u2019s job is to give the group something to work with.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\">Whoever asserts a vision for the group to work with to a clear conclusion is acting in the role of leader.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>To get a set of possible visions to start with ahead of the session, the leader might do any or all of the following:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1651\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/intelliven.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/How-to-Get-Clear1.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1651 size-full fadein\" title=\"How to Get Clear\" src=\"https:\/\/intelliven.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/How-to-Get-Clear1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">Figure 3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Have each team member submit a vision, anonymously if necessary.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Hire a consultant to generate alternatives.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Compile alternatives based on what other admired organizations are doing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the session, select one from the above or from what otherwise occurs, and\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit;\">start with that as if it were the vision<\/span>.\u00a0 Iterate on it until it becomes clear that it is right and alignment can be achieved, or set it aside and work with another.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat until a vision to align around is found even if it takes several sessions.
