It is the one that is most adaptable to change.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, the greater the change (and the larger the organization), the greater the resistance to change. \u00a0The 6 Change Approaches\u00a0is a model to prevent, decrease, or minimize resistance to change in organizations. \u00a0These 6 approaches are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Education and Communication<\/li>\n<li>Participation and Involvement<\/li>\n<li>Facilitation and Support<\/li>\n<li>Negotiation and Agreement<\/li>\n<li>Manipulation and Co-optation<\/li>\n<li>Explicit and Implicit Coercion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkits\/organization\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2741\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/6change.png\" alt=\"6change\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/6change.png 1024w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/6change-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All people who are affected by change experience some level emotional turmoil. \u00a0 In fact, even changes that appear to be &#8220;positive&#8221; or &#8220;rational&#8221; involve loss and uncertainty. \u00a0This causes a resistance to change.<\/p>\n<p>There are 4 basic reasons why people are resistant to change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parochial self-interest<\/li>\n<li>Misunderstanding<\/li>\n<li>Low tolerance for change<\/li>\n<li>Different assessments of the situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s take a look at the 6 approaches to change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Education and Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the best ways to overcome change resistance is to inform and educate people about the change effort beforehand. \u00a0Preceding communication and education helps employees see the logic in the change effort. \u00a0This reduces unfounded and incorrect rumors concerning the effects of change in the organization. \u00a0Once persuaded, people will often help with the implementation of the change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0Participation and Involvement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can often avoid change resistance if we involve the potential change resisters during the design and implementation of change. \u00a0With a participative change effort, we listen to the people the change involves and use their advice.<\/p>\n<p>Where we do not have all the information they need to design the change, or when they need the complete commitment of others to do so, involving others makes good sense. \u00a0Typically, participation leads to commitment and commitment is needed for the change to be a success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Facilitation and Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We should incorporate Facilitation and Support when resistance to change stems from adjustment problems. \u00a0By being supportive of employees during difficult times, managers can prevent potential resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Managerial support helps employees to deal with their fear and anxiety during a transition period. In this case, the basis of resistance to change is likely to be the perception that there will be some form of detrimental effect caused by the change in the organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Negotiation and Agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the resistance is because someone&#8211;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>will lose out due to change; or<\/li>\n<li>has power to resist<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8211;we should involve Negotiation and Agreement. \u00a0Managers can combat resistance by offering incentives to employees not to resist change. This can be done by allowing people who are resisting the change to veto certain elements of change that are threatening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
