But it\u2019s necessary, because that total needs to be both legally compliant and contractually correct. It\u2019s a number that underpins everything from annual leave entitlement to hourly pay rates and pro-rata calculations<\/strong> for part-timers. Get it right, and your workload planning will be smooth sailing, your leave calendar beautifully balanced and your forecasts spot on. But get it wrong, and you tip the first domino on a run of payroll errors, staff disputes and admin headaches\u2026<\/p>\n

What Is a “Working Hour?”<\/h2>\n

According to the Working Time Regulations 1998<\/strong>, a “working hour” is any time the worker is at the employer\u2019s disposal and carrying out work duties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Quick Answer: How Many Working Hours in a Year UK?<\/h2>\n

Assuming 261 working days<\/strong> in a year (365 days minus 104 weekend days \u2013 in a leap year you\u2019ll need to add a day) and a standard full-time employment contract with 37.5 hours a week with 28 days\u2019 statutory leave<\/strong>, the total gross number of working hours is 1,957.5. Take off 210 hours for annual leave, and you have a grand total of 1,747.5 net working hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The reality for most companies is a bit more complex. Using 1,745.5 hours as your full-time gold standard, the total working hours for any other type of contract will be a percentage of that figure. For example, a part-time worker doing 60% of full-time hours would be working 1,048.5 hours per year (1,747.5 x 0.60 = 1,048.5).<\/p>\n
