Your boss might not be the most emotionally evolved mammal on the planet.\u00a0 Chances are you will have to deal with (or have already dealt with) a boss that is all too like the chicanery you see from Dunder Mifflin\u2019s leadership team.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what you do, it\u2019s never enough.\u00a0 Your results are never big enough or fast enough.\u00a0 Even though the boss is never there, when he does decide to show up he \u201csecond guesses\u201d all your decisions and keeps asking \u201cwhat the hell is going on around here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the while you are using all your big people skills to not shout out the obvious answer \u2014 \u201cYou would know if you were here\u2026\u201d\u00a0 But you shut your mouth and pretend to take notes on the clipboard you are holding.\u00a0 Muttering to yourself if having a job is really all that worth it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Not for bosses like that!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The extra stress and chaos does nothing but bring you years closer to your death.\u00a0 It\u2019s not only stupid, it\u2019s dangerous \u2013 to your mental and physical health.<\/p>\n<p>So what can you do?\u00a0 Do you just slam the door, throw your boss \u201cthe bird,\u201d and collect unemployment?\u00a0 <em>Maybe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But if you play your cards right, you can find yourself in a better place (mentally, physically, and financially\u2026) with just some good old-fashioned planning.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how to handle the situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Do your job right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the kicker.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get sloppy.\u00a0 And don\u2019t get lazy.\u00a0 Even the biggest moron bosses can spot a slouch from a mile away.\u00a0 You don\u2019t need a target on your chest while you are plotting your escape, so do your job.\u00a0 And do it damn well.\u00a0 You don\u2019t gain a thing from cutting corners or trying to game the system in your favour.<\/p>\n<p>Your boss owns your ass for the eight hours (or more) that he is paying you to be there.\u00a0 Moron or not, he owns you.\u00a0 That right.\u00a0 If you are taking his money then you owe him effort.\u00a0 Don\u2019t make things worse by shirking your responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Don\u2019t pick sides or get petty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only way that moron bosses can have friends (temporarily\u2026) is by pitting employees against each other.\u00a0 They will draw you into a discussion and try to get you to complain or poke holes at another person that you are doing business alongside.\u00a0 Then once you are out of the room, they do the exact opposite to the other person \u2014 except this time it is aimed at you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t fall into that trap.<\/p>\n<p>Be polite but insist that you don\u2019t have anything to say bad about your peers \u2014 even if you do.\u00a0 What you don\u2019t know is that it\u2019s not a level playing field.\u00a0 If you take the high road you\u2019ll avoid the traps.\u00a0 And by the way, you need your peers to help you with your next steps, so don\u2019t burn bridges.\u00a0 Be fair. Don\u2019t be petty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Plan your exit expertly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Find out what you want to do next and make it happen.\u00a0 Have a budget. Know exactly how much money you need to keep your dream alive.\u00a0 Write down the one thing you would do if money were not an option.\u00a0 Start doing that thing after hours (instead of watching TV).\u00a0 Volunteer if you can\u2019t get paid to do what you love.<\/p>\n<p>But most importantly, be an expert about your future. Money. Time. Location.\u00a0 Know everything about what and where you want to be.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to make an uninformed decision and find yourself crawling back to a bad boss \u2014 just because that\u2019s the only thing you can get paid to do.\u00a0 Create a plan.\u00a0 Put the steps on a calendar.\u00a0 Start executing.\u00a0\u00a0 You\u2019ll be out of there in no time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Don\u2019t repeat your past mistakes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If there are personality types that annoy you, then avoid them \u2014 at all costs.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t work for male bosses, then find a female leader to work for.\u00a0 This is where you need to be really clear about what made your boss such a moron in the first place.\u00a0 Was he\/she offensive?\u00a0 Crude?\u00a0 Obnoxious?\u00a0 Unfairly demanding?\u00a0 What are the 2 or 3 things that make the situation unworkable from your perspective?<\/p>\n<p>By the way, a lot of male bosses are perverts.\u00a0 They talk about God and how much they love their wives, but two weeks later they are trying to play \u201cgrab ass\u201d with you.\u00a0 Talk to other people who work there.\u00a0 Buy them a beer.\u00a0 They will tell you everything you need to know to make an informed decision.\u00a0 Whatever you do, don\u2019t leave just to leave.\u00a0 And don\u2019t take another job just because it\u2019s not the one you have right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Get physical along the way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frankly, this whole situation is rubbish.\u00a0 Big time.\u00a0 Stress and panic and chaos are never good ingredients to add to your lifestyle.\u00a0 The resulting product is sure to look pretty worn out.\u00a0 You need to plan extra \u201cstress-relieving\u201d into your schedule.\u00a0 And that doesn\u2019t just mean more sex.\u00a0 It means physical exercise.\u00a0 You hitting something or running somewhere or sweating.<\/p>\n<p>There is something empowering about working through your frustrations.\u00a0 It\u2019s healing.\u00a0 And that\u2019s what you need a lot of.\u00a0 To keep a level head and to execute the other steps we talked about you need to be a warrior.\u00a0 Focused.\u00a0 On message.\u00a0 Ready to spring into action at the right moment.\u00a0 Get in shape.\u00a0 You\u2019ll need it.<\/p>\n<p>This is always tougher to do than to talk about.<\/p>\n<p>You can only fix you. So focus on that.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that.\u00a0 There will always be idiots and morons.\u00a0 But you don\u2019t need to work for one.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re better than that.\u00a0 Get out.\u00a0 But do it your way.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let frayed emotions and stressed decision-making force your hand into doing something that is hard to recover from.
