In my article called\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/project-management-vs-change-management\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Management vs Change Management<\/a>,\u00a0I said Change and Change Management are widely recognised terms, but unfortunately misunderstood ones&#8230; therein is probably the subject of another article.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">So, here is that article.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">First of all let\u2019s go with a few definitions (as usual) but I am not going to quote some of the better known sources; e.g. Prosci rather I have chosen some lesser known sources at random:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><strong>From a \u201c<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.the-happy-manager.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/fav1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Happy Manager<\/a>\u201d article<\/strong> &#8212; Adopting processes for managing change that are appropriate to the nature, characteristics and context of the change being managed, that take people with you and are focused on achieving successful outcomes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><strong>From a \u201c<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/searchcio.techtarget.com\/favicon.ico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tech Target<\/a>\u201d article<\/strong> &#8212; Change management is a systematic approach to dealing with change, both from the perspective of an organization and on the individual level.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><strong>From a \u201c<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/newPPM_87.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mind Tools<\/a>\u201d article<\/strong> &#8212; Change management is a structured approach for ensuring that changes are thoroughly and smoothly implemented, and that the lasting benefits of change are achieved.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><strong>And finally from \u201c<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.practical-management-skills.com\/what-is-change-management.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Practical Management Skills<\/a>\u201d they offer a definition of both \u201cChange\u201d and \u201cChange Management\u201d<\/strong> &#8212;\n<ul style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Change \u2026 the process of moving from the current state to a vision of the future.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Change Management \u2026 managing this transition from the old position to the new.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">It seems that although they all define the term differently, they all have essentially the same\/similar message:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Moving from Old to New.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Achievement of Success and\u00a0Benefits.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">People and\u00a0Individuals.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Structured and\u00a0Systematic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Expanding on the last bullet, the Change Management \u201cNO\u201d fraternity will argue that&#8211;<em>yes, you guessed it<\/em>&#8211;change cannot be managed! Well, I kind of agree and disagree. <em>Why?<\/em> Because:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">You can manage all of the following which can be included in a plan and have associated timescales and deliverables:\n<ul style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/business-document\/stakeholder-analysis-and-management-962\" target=\"_blank\">Stakeholder Engagement.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/business-document\/communication-966\" target=\"_blank\">Communications.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/business-document\/process-2-analysis-and-design-963\" target=\"_blank\">Process Change.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Organisational Change.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/business-document\/measuring-business-readiness-and-adoption-967\" target=\"_blank\">Business Readiness\u00a0and\u00a0Adoption Monitoring.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">What you cannot manage and include in a plan and have associated timescales and deliverables for (but will clearly impact them) is:\n<ul style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Change Resistance.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Corporate Culture.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Business Readiness.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Leadership Styles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">NOTE: It is arguable that these should form part of a Change Management Risk plan!<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">So for me, there are two sides of Change Management&#8230; the hard side and the soft side. Whether these can be managed by a single individual is the key issue. I have made my view on this subject abundantly clear in the PM vs CM post I referred to earlier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">But let\u2019s move on to the wider debate of what can we replace the term with!<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">There are those that argue their case for Change Leadership&#8230; 900,000 + hits on Google by the way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Forbes published an article by John Kotter in 2011 called\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/johnkotter\/2011\/07\/12\/change-management-vs-change-leadership-whats-the-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Change Management vs. Change Leadership &#8212; What&#8217;s the Difference?<\/a>\u00a0in which he distinguishes between the two:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><strong>Change Management<\/strong> is a set of processes and a set of tools and a set of mechanisms that are designed to make sure that when you do try to make some changes, A, it doesn\u2019t get out of control, and B, the number of problems associated with it\u2014you know, rebellion among the ranks, bleeding of cash that you can\u2019t afford\u2013doesn\u2019t happen. So it is a way of making a big change and keeping it, in a sense, under control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><strong>Change Leadership<\/strong> associated with putting an engine on the whole change process, and making it go faster, smarter, more efficiently. It\u2019s more associated, therefore, with large scale changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Interesting that he differentiates between the two yet I think he is also saying that the two go hand-in-hand \u2026 that\u2019s my take anyhow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Then there are those that would go with Transformation Management (note the use of the word management). Just let\u2019s complicate matters for a short while by referring you to the following article in\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/changeleadersnetwork.com\/favicon.ico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Change Leader\u2019s Network<\/a>\u00a0in which they talk about:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Developmental Change.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Transitional Change.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Transformational Change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Started to get a headache yet? Yes? Good!<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">And just to make matters worse let\u2019s talk about Transition Management which the\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessdictionary.com\/definition\/transition-management.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Business Dictionary<\/a>\u00a0explains as the \u201cSystematic planning, implementing, and monitoring change in an organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Wait a minute have we now turned full circle because we are talking about change again!<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Sometimes I associate things with music and all of a sudden I have started singing the Beatles song \u201c<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Help<\/a>\u201d in my head \u2026 note the use of the word \u201cchanged\u201d in the lyrics! Sorry a slight digression&#8230; let\u2019s continue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">So we have Leadership, Change, Transformation and Transition. It is interesting when you run these words through the \u201cMS Word\u201d Thesaurus:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Leadership \u2013 management, control, guidance, headship, direction, governance.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Change \u2013 alteration, modification, variation, transformation, revolution, conversion, adjustment, amendment, difference.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Transformation \u2013 alteration, change, conversion, revolution, renovation, makeover.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Transition \u2013 change, changeover, evolution, conversion, shift, move, switch, alteration, modification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">What this tells me is that Change, Transformation and Transition really all mean the same thing but Leadership is a bit different although you will note the words management, control and direction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Finally &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">I think I may have used this phrase before \u2026 \u201chorses for courses\u201d. That to me sums up this whole debate. If you, or an organisation, feel comfortable with the words Change Management then what the hell, carry on using it. Equally so for the words Leadership, Transformation and Transition!<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">Me, I am a Change Manager, always have been and always will be but I can be a leader and I can also get involved in transformation and transition work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #4d4f51;\">In reference to the term Change Management, another Beatles song has just come into my mind \u2026 \u201c<a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #7b539d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Let It Be<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just as a \u201cstarter for 10,\u201d when you type in \u201cChange Management\u201d as a search string into Google, you get in excess of 2 million hits.
