{"id":11269,"date":"2022-08-05T07:01:13","date_gmt":"2022-08-05T12:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/?p=11269"},"modified":"2022-08-04T09:02:46","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T14:02:46","slug":"strategic-priorities-identification-and-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/strategic-priorities-identification-and-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategic Priorities Identification and Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11273 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-1024x490.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-768x367.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-1536x734.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Strategy2-2048x979.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/>Listed companies share their strategic objectives for investors\u2019 and public consumption.\u00a0 Websites, annual financial reports, and Form 10-K report are all critical resources to understand an organization, key offerings, competitive advantage, and market position.<\/p>\r\n<p>Research into the public documents of listed companies brings to light key data about these companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/stream\/strategy-development\">their Strategies, and their Strategic Priorities<\/a>.\u00a0 MIT Sloan Management Review carried out a research in 2014 on <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/bringing-strategy-implementation-together-1796\">Strategy Implementation<\/a>.\u00a0 The research involved 494 organizations that had already a place in the S&amp;P 500 Index.\u00a0 The objective was to analyze how these enterprises outlined their Strategic Priorities in their annual and other reports.<\/p>\r\n<p>The public documents that were evaluated to identify Strategic Priorities for the study included:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Fiscal year\u2019s Form 10-K report<\/li>\r\n<li>Description of business from Part 1, Item 1 of 10-K report<\/li>\r\n<li>Management\u2019s description of company operations (Part 2, Item 7).<\/li>\r\n<li>Any mention of \u201cstrategy,\u201d \u201cstrategic,\u201d \u201cfocus,\u201d or \u201cimperatives.\u201d<\/li>\r\n<li>Companies\u2019 annual reports\u2014especially letter from the CEO or chairman.<\/li>\r\n<li>Investor Relations page of respective organizations\u2019 websites<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Some organizations did not disclose their strategic priorities in any of the data sources identified above.\u00a0 Those firms did not qualify for the research and were left out.<\/p>\r\n<p>To understand an organization\u2019s prioritized actions to implement Strategy, MIT Sloan study employed 5 critical filters to assess the viability of strategic objectives.<\/p>\r\n<p>All the documents that were reviewed as part of research had to pass the following 5 filters to be designated as viable \u201cStrategic Priorities.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Clearly Labelled<\/strong> \u2013 In the study, strategic objectives were considered clearly defined only when labelled in the public documents as \u201cstrategies,\u201d \u201dstrategic objectives \/ initiatives;\u201d listed as a separate section, underlined in bold, or as bullets.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Ranked<\/strong> \u2013 From a large list of objectives, the study qualified only those as Strategic Priorities when 6 or fewer prioritized objectives were included in the public documents. Of the 351 cases, 321 (91%) listed 6 or fewer strategic objectives.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Goal Directed<\/strong> \u2013 Strategic objectives qualified for the study were expressed with action verbs in the public reports\u2014e.g. grow, improve, increase\u2014or with a gerund\u2014e.g. achieving, cutting\u2014to guide how they will be achieved.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Referencing Implementation Approach<\/strong> \u2013 Priorities were deemed strategic when a description on the means to implement a company\u2019s strategy was itemized in the 10-K or Annual Report\u2019s \u201coverview of business\u201d or \u201cmanagement discussion\u201d sections.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Differentiating Priorities from Annual \/ Quarterly Goals<\/strong> \u2013 It takes time to achieve strategic initiatives, so those were separated from quarterly or annual targets.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/strategic-priorities-identification-and-analysis-6308\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11515\" src=\"http:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strategic-Priorities.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1335\" height=\"752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strategic-Priorities.png 1335w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strategic-Priorities-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strategic-Priorities-1024x577.png 1024w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Strategic-Priorities-768x433.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1335px) 100vw, 1335px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>The study identified a total of 1,508 Strategic Priorities through the data gathered from annual and 10-K reports of 311 organizations.<\/p>\r\n<p>Strategic Priorities were then classified into the following 4 categories:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Dominant Logic \u2013<\/strong> This category of Strategic Priorities deals with elements such as products, costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/the-innovation-process-3625\">Innovation<\/a>, customers, platforms, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/operational-excellence-operational-interoperability-3120\">Operational Excellence<\/a>, and growth. The objective of this category of strategic priorities is to improve the business portfolio.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Market Positioning<\/strong> \u2013 This category of Strategic Priorities pertains to markets, geographic expansion, positioning, discounted offerings, and price. The focus of this class is on furthering market position, geographical expansion, and growth.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Resources and Capabilities<\/strong> \u2013 The next category of strategic priorities entails key talent, values, technological, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/sales-management-ecosystem-5331\">Sales<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/omnichannel-marketing-2805\">Marketing<\/a>, Distribution, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/strategic-branding-1708\">Branding<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/supply-chain-sustainability-5087\">Supply Chain<\/a> capabilities and resources.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Stakeholder Theory <\/strong>\u2013 This category of Strategic Priorities involves actions related to shareholder value, social \/ environmental \/ regulatory and safety goals.
