Prahalad.\u00a0 In fact, using this framework, industries and individual organizations can achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/innovation-management-inno\">breakthrough Innovation<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It promotes exploration and experimentation&#8211;while under extreme conditions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10467\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/pexels-photo-5997574-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/pexels-photo-5997574-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/pexels-photo-5997574.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For this framework to be implemented effectively, there are 4 core conditions that must be met:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Innovation must result in an offering of world-class quality.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The innovation must achieve a significant price reduction.\u00a0 And, by &#8220;significant,&#8221; we mean the reduction in price should exceed 90% off the cost of a comparable offering in a \u201cWestern\u201d country.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>The Innovation must be scalable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>The Innovation must be affordable at the bottom of the economic pyramid.\u00a0 Serving bottom-of-the-pyramid customer base forces Innovation due to the extreme limitations intrinsic to serving this market.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This approach is called the Innovation Sandbox,\u00a0because exploration and experimentation must be creative and free-flowing, like sand\u2014whereas, being \u201cboxed\u201d in by rigid constraints.\u00a0 Take a look at the slide below to better visualize the &#8220;sandbox&#8221; metaphor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/innovation-sandbox-6021\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10466\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/innovation_sandbox1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1002\" height=\"752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/innovation_sandbox1.png 1002w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/innovation_sandbox1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/innovation_sandbox1-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our constraints are captured by the frame of the sandbox.\u00a0 These core constraints are industry or market requirements that are extremely fixed.\u00a0 \u00a0There can be more or less than 4 constraints. However, 4 is typically and there shouldn\u2019t be many more or less.<\/p>\n<p>The Innovations are illustrated inside the sandbox.\u00a0 With the constraints clearly defined, this then forces unconventional, creative thinking to drive Innovations.\u00a0 Ironically, to think of the box, we need to play in the sandbox.\u00a0 \u00a0There can be any number of Innovations that exist in the sandbox.<\/p>\n<p>There is no generic, one-size-fits-all sandbox design\u2014as each industry, market, and business is different.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of an Innovation Sandbox built for the India Healthcare Industry.\u00a0 On this slide, we have laid out the 4 constraints, plus <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/business-model-innovation\">7 interrelated Business Model Innovations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/innovation-sandbox-6021\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10465\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/innovation_sandbox2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1002\" height=\"752\" https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/innovation_sandbox2-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The India Healthcare Industry is an ideal environment to apply the Innovation Sandbox, as the constraints are obvious and extreme.\u00a0 \u00a0More specifically, India, the second largest country in the world with a population of 1.38B people, is notorious for poor public health with numerous ailments at epidemic proportions and a scarcity of healthcare professionals.\u00a0 \u00a0Among India\u2019s healthcare issues include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High spread of HIV\/AIDS<\/li>\n<li>High rates of infant mortality<\/li>\n<li>Over 6 million blind people<\/li>\n<li>Over 50 million malnourished children<\/li>\n<li>Over 100 million patients with type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Over 80% of the population cannot afford the costs of healthcare<\/li>\n<li>Health insurance unavailable to most people<\/li>\n<li>Ratio of physicians to total population less than 1 per 100,000 people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Furthermore, about 70% of the population live in rural and semi-urban areas that can be difficult to reach.<\/p>\n<p>One example of a company that abides these constrains and drove such Innovations within the India Healthcare Industry is Jaipur Foot.\u00a0 \u00a0Jaipur Foot produces a prosthetic foot made form rubber, intended for below-the-knee amputees, such as people injured by accidents and land mines.\u00a0 A foot costs about $30.\u00a0 Compare this to the $8,000 to $10,000 price of a similar Western prosthesis.\u00a0 This over a 99% reduction in price!\u00a0 \u00a0In a year, the company performs about 16,000 procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Another great example is Aravind Eye Care.\u00a0 \u00a0Aravind is the world largest provider of cataract surgery.\u00a0 \u00a0In a year, the company performs 240,000 surgeries and treats 1.6MM outpatients.\u00a0 \u00a0Aravind treats over 60% of its patients free of charge\u2014and the company still operates profitably!<\/p>\n<p>These results seem almost too good to be true.\u00a0 But, following the Spartan Sandbox Innovation approach, it is possible.\u00a0 In fact,\u00a0organizations in any industry, in any country, can adopt the Sandbox Innovation approach to breakthrough Innovation.<\/p>\n<p>To elevate your chances of success requires 5 core guiding principles that management must follow:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Radically rethink the entire business model.<\/li>\n<li>Immerse themselves in the lives of the target consumers.<\/li>\n<li>Accept constraints.<\/li>\n<li>Do not innovation in solation<\/li>\n<li>Be fully committed to a strategic intent.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In particular, I want to highlight this 3rd principle&#8211;accept the constraints!\u00a0\u00a0Contrary to some beliefs, breakthrough creativity requires an explicit acknowledgment of the constraints and limits.\u00a0\u00a0The zone of comfort drives away the zone of opportunity.\u00a0 With extreme constraints, we are forced out of the zone of comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember, our organization cannot do all things.\u00a0 We must do a few things very
