In other words, strategic thinking is installed among as many people throughout the organization as possible.\u00a0 At the right (few) are those who favor top-down formulation. In other words, Strategy is developed by the few\u2014the designated expert planners and senior executives\u2014while the rest of the organization is dedicated to execution of the Strategy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10037\" src=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/pexels-photo-5717571-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/pexels-photo-5717571-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/flevy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/pexels-photo-5717571.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>The y-axis represents time orientation.\u00a0\u00a0At the top (future), we have those who favor moving toward a long-term destination that may be different from the organization\u2019s current position.\u00a0 At the opposite end (present), we have those who favor letting the organization\u2019s strategic direction emerge from its current state.<\/p>\n<p>It is actually common for organizations to rotate from one School of Strategy to another over time.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s define each School of Strategy in further depth.<\/p>\n<h2>The Position School<\/h2>\n<p>The idea of Strategic Planning began to take form in the 1960s, driven by an increased availability of data (e.g. costs, prices, performance metrics) and economic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>From the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/strategic-planning\">Strategic Planning<\/a>, a Strategy was developed.\u00a0 This was an overarching plan for growth, usually formalized in a business document and endorsed by the CEO.\u00a0 This Strategy Plan aimed at creating a dominant, unassailable market position for the organization in the market.<\/p>\n<p>These early efforts by the \u201cPosition School\u201d believed successful Strategy emerged through the comprehensive analysis of all critical factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>External markets<\/li>\n<li>Internal capabilities<\/li>\n<li>Customer and societal needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This typically, a <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/swot\">SWOT<\/a> exercise is conducted as part of the Strategic Planning session.<\/p>\n<p>A breakthrough in the Position School was driven by the advent of Bruce Henderson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/bcg-experience-curve-2745\">BCG Experience Curve<\/a>, which also led to the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/strategy-classics-bcg-growth-share-matrix-4130\">BCG Growth-Share Matrix<\/a>.\u00a0 Michael Porter later brought the Position School to a level of unprecedented sophistication through his <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/strategy-classics-porters-five-forces-4051\">Porter\u2019s Five Forces<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/browse\/flevypro\/strategy-classics-porters-value-chain-4058\">Porter\u2019s Value Chain<\/a> frameworks.\u00a0 A more modern framework still under the Position School is <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/blue-ocean-strategy\">Blue Ocean Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Execution School<\/h2>\n<p>The Execution School is founded on the belief that organizations should focus on Execution and <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/operational-excellence\">Operational Excellence<\/a>\u2014i.e. an internal focus, instead of external, as the case of the Position School.<\/p>\n<p>Operational Excellence is tied closely to operations-focused management philosophies of <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/six-sigma-project-6s\">Six Sigma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/lean-management-enterprise-lean\">Lean Management<\/a>.\u00a0 The underlying focus is <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/continuous-improvement\">Continuous Improvement<\/a> throughout the organization by focusing on the needs of the customer, empowering employees, and optimizing existing activities in the process.<\/p>\n<h2>The Adaption School<\/h2>\n<p>The Adaption (and Experimentation) School emerged in the 1990s through the thought leadership of <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/henry-mintzberg\">Henry Mintzberg<\/a>.\u00a0 Mintzberg\u2019s strategic approach focused on discovering a more creative, experimental approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/decision-making\">decision making<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0The thesis is to achieve results through acting quickly and creatively in response to events.<\/p>\n<p>The management focus here is <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/learning-organization\">Organizational Learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Concentration School<\/h2>\n<p>The fourth school of thought, Concentration School, argued that the most effective strategy is to foster a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/flevy.com\/business-toolkit\/core-competencies-analysis\">Core Competencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Per Gary Hamel and C.K.
